EMCDDA Director Alexis Goosdeel is in Berlin today where he is speaking at a public hearing at the German Parliament (Bundestag) on the issue of new psychoactive substances (NPS). The hearing is organised by the Bundestag Health Committee and chaired by Dr Edgar Franke (Member of the German Parliament).
The public hearing is considering two proposals:
- a proposal for a law to control the dissemination of NPS (18/8579)
- a parliamentarian petition by the German Left Party (LINKE) for a modern response to NPS (18/8459)
Mr Goosdeel is speaking on the policy challenges presented by the NPS phenomenon and the achievements of the EU Early Warning System through which the EMCDDA and Europol monitor these substances.
Participants at the public hearing include experts from: the Federal Association of Psychotherapists; a health insurance umbrella organisation; associations of therapists; criminal law experts and researchers in the area of drugs and addictions in Germany.
