Webinar on the updated ECDC-EUDA public health guidance on prevention and control of drug-related infectious diseases among PWID: application in the Southern European Neighbourhood Policy Area

Background: In 2023, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA) launched an update of the 2011 Public health guidance on prevention and control of infectious diseases among people who inject drugs. The updated guidance aims to support policymakers and public health programme managers and planners by making available the evidence base for developing national strategies, policies and programmes for a population of people who inject drugs (PWID). This group is particularly vulnerable to drug-related infectious diseases, such as HIV and viral hepatitis.
The updated guidance was highlighted in a side-event, co-organised by EU4Monitoring Drugs II project (funded by the EU and the EUDA) at the 2024 Lisbon Addictions Conference. It was also widely disseminated by email and social networks.
The overall objectives of this webinar are to:
- present an overview of the updated public health guidance and recommendations for the prevention and control of infectious diseases among PWID and the elimination of viral hepatitis and HIV among this group;
- reflect on the relevance of the guidance for the Middle East and North Africa region by selected countries.
The webinar is designed for policymakers, infectious diseases experts and representatives from civil society organisations from the geographic region covered by the Middle East and North Africa Harm Reduction Association (MENAHRA), including participants from countries of the Southern European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) area.
